I chose to paint this pair in warm evening light to accentuate the beautful markings of the male and to liven up the somewhat drab colors of the female. By turning each duck a little in opposite directions, I hoped to give more of a sense of movement as they skim over a placid lake. I believe they are the most handsome of the mergansers. The hooded Merganser is the smallest merganser in North America. It has a brownish-black back and wings and a long, narrow, serrated bill. The female hooded mergansers iris is a dull brown hue, while the males iris is bright yellow. The males of this species have white, fan-like crests atop their black heads. Hooded Mergansers live in forested wetlands in their range. They winter in shallow ponds, bays, and estuaries.
